Mariah Carey Tops Billboard’s Hot 100 for Fifth Year

Mariah Carey Tops Billboard’s Hot 100 for Fifth Year: The Christmas icon continues her reign.
Mariah Carey’s celebrated holiday anthem, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” clinched the top position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated Dec. 23, 2023. Notably, the track has maintained a presence on the Hot 100 for 63 weeks, Billboard confirms.

In its ascent, the song displaced Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” from its two-week stint at No. 1. Impressively, Lee’s classic reached the chart’s peak 65 years after its original release, according to Billboard.
Billboard notes that Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is the inaugural song to lead the Hot 100 chart in “five separate chart runs.”

  • It first topped Billboard’s chart in 2019, staying at No. 1 for three weeks.
  • In 2020, the song remained No. 1 for two weeks.
  • In 2021, it topped the chart for three weeks.
  • And in 2022, the song took the top spot for four weeks.

Released in 1994, the song made its initial appearance in Billboard’s Hot 100 top 10 in December 2017 and ascended to the top 5 by December 2018. Since then, it has consistently secured the No. 1 position year after year.
With “All I Want for Christmas Is You” reigning at the top spot for 13 weeks, Carey joins Boyz II Men as the sole artists to have three tracks each leading the Hot 100 for 13 weeks or longer, as reported by Billboard.

Upon reaching the top 3 in November 2019, coinciding with its 25th anniversary, the song became the first holiday track in six decades to achieve this milestone.

“I aimed for it to exude a timeless feel, but I never anticipated it becoming a true classic,” Carey remarked regarding the song. “I express this with genuine humility because Christmas music holds a deep significance for me. Witnessing the song’s enduring popularity over the years has been truly remarkable. I couldn’t have foreseen it.”
Following her recent accomplishment, Carey concluded her “Merry Christmas One and All!” tour with a spectacular finale at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Dec. 17.
Mariah Carey’s concluding Christmas tour performance shines with festive classics, familial celebrations, and a guest appearance by Busta Rhymes.

“Who Authored ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’?”

Carey crafted both the melody and lyrics of the Christmas tune in collaboration with co-writer and producer Walter Afanasieff.
“I conceived the melody and lyrics; while he contributed instrumentally and with some additional writing, it remains my creation,” Carey expressed songwriter Andy Stone, performing under the stage name Vince Vance, has filed lawsuits against Carey, alleging that the Grammy-winning artist plagiarized the song from him. The initial lawsuit emerged in June 2022 but was withdrawn by November 2022. However, a subsequent lawsuit was initiated in Los Angeles in November 2023. The current status of the litigation remains undisclosed, and Carey has yet to address the accusations.
