Her situation has become emblematic of the often-discussed Munchausen by Proxy phenomenon, a psychological condition where a caregiver induces or feigns illness in those under their care for attention or sympathy.
In a candid conversation with People magazine, Blanchard emphasized her intent behind joining the Lifetime documentary series. “I aim to highlight that even amidst abusive circumstances, there are alternatives to drastic measures like this,” she expressed. “When one feels trapped, it’s crucial to remember there’s always another path forward. Seek any solution, but avoid such irreversible choices.”
If given the opportunity to start afresh, I often ponder whether I’d revisit my childhood and confide in my aunts and uncles about the truth behind my health or intervene at that critical moment with Nick, declaring my intention to disclose everything to the authorities. Such reflections weigh heavily on my mind, leaving me in contemplation.
Her experiences and transgressions have previously been explored in documentaries such as the HBO production “Mommy Dead and Dearest” and the Hulu series “The Act.”
Executive producer Melissa Moore mentioned that the six-hour special features interviews with Gypsy conducted over the last seven years. “Throughout this period, I’ve witnessed her evolve into a woman who acknowledges her past and is now prepared to confront a world of newfound freedom,” Moore stated in the announcement.

Currently recognized as “Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another,” this condition is believed to be the driving force behind Dee Dee’s extensive deception. She misled friends, relatives, charitable organizations, medical professionals, and even Gypsy, persuading them all that her daughter suffered from severe illnesses and was significantly younger than her actual age.
Dee Dee went to great lengths to make Gypsy believe she couldn’t walk, breathe, or eat without assistance, leading her to rely on a wheelchair, feeding tube, and oxygen. Subsequent investigations revealed that Gypsy could indeed walk, eat, and breathe on her own.
Dee Dee initiated her medical manipulation of Gypsy when the latter was merely 8 years old. At that young age, Dee Dee claimed her daughter had received diagnoses of leukemia and muscular dystrophy, asserting the need for a wheelchair, feeding tube, and other medical interventions.
Dee Dee’s pattern of portraying her daughter as unwell began even earlier, as she claimed Gypsy suffered from sleep apnea shortly after her birth. As time progressed, Dee Dee further alleged that Gypsy dealt with seizures, asthma, as well as hearing and vision impairments. She went to the extent of obtaining medications and recommending surgeries based on these purported conditions.
Gypsy and her boyfriend, Godejohn, eventually plotted an escape from Dee Dee, which tragically culminated in Dee Dee’s fatal stabbing. In the aftermath of this incident, Gypsy received a 10-year sentence.
