Ellen Pompeo Teases Comeback as Meredith Grey in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 20 Preview: Ellen Pompeo is set to make a notable comeback in the forthcoming season of “Grey’s Anatomy,” as hinted in an intense new preview.
While Pompeo had a reduced presence in Season 19 of the popular ABC medical series, the upcoming Season 20, premiering on March 14, marks the first time she won’t be a regular cast member.
Despite this shift, Pompeo will retain her role as an executive producer for the show and will lend her voice for the introductory and concluding narrations of each episode.
The Season 20 teaser unmistakably showcases Meredith Grey’s resurgence, reminding viewers of her enduring presence and impact on the series.
“How much longer do I need to wait?” Meredith questions. The scene transitions to surgical interns preparing for another day at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
“Ready to roll?” prompts Miranda Bailey, portrayed by Chandra Wilson.
As they stroll through the hospital corridors, Miranda confides in Meredith, expressing concern that “the interns are facing some challenges.”
In Season 19, Meredith oversaw the integration of five new surgical interns, revitalizing the teaching program that the hospital had previously disbanded. Notably, this season marked the first occasion where interns transitioned into series regulars.
Ellen Pompeo has portrayed her iconic character since 2005, spanning over 400 episodes. Her journey on the show evolved from an intern to a surgical resident, eventually rising to the position of attending surgeon and concluding her tenure as the chief of surgery.
Discussing her character’s future, Pompeo engaged in a candid conversation with her former co-star, Katherine Heigl, as part of Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series.
“I’m hoping to make occasional appearances next year, provided my schedule permits,” she revealed. “It’s not a definitive farewell. There’s still a compelling narrative to explore.”
Alongside Pompeo’s reduced involvement, the show experienced another significant casting change earlier in the year. Following a nine-year tenure on “Grey’s Anatomy,” Kelly McCreary confirmed her exit from the series through an Instagram announcement in March.
Viewers can anticipate the premiere of Season 20 of “Grey’s Anatomy” on March 14 at 9 p.m. ET, airing on ABC.
